When Jim, Louise and I, last spoke with Brother Denis Casey in August 2004 he told us a great deal about the work done in the Belize Mission. He told us about the schools and how ill equipped they are. His enthusiasm and total commitment was obvious so on the way home from Buckden, we discussed the situation for a long time thinking deeply about the things he had told us. Can children learn to read if they do not have any books? How can children learn to write if they did not have any tools for the job? The conversation lasted until we were nearly home. We decided that as well as filling shoeboxes at Christmas we should perhaps think about doing something for Belize. However, we did not know where to begin, so we decided to put it on hold and think about it nearer to Christmas.
But, on hearing of the death of Brother Denis, we talked about what might be a fitting memorial for his life and, remembering our last talks with him, Belize seemed to be the answer. We decided to begin on a small scale and hope to spread the idea with the many friends Brother Denis acquired over the years. Our idea is to fill a pencil case with 2 pens, 2 pencils, 2 felt tipped pens, 2 pencil crayons, 1 pencil eraser, 1 pencil sharpener and a small ruler. We sent off ten of these ?Casey?s Cases? at Christmas and hope to send at least ten each month.
We all feel that Brother Denis would smile at the venture. If anyone wishes to join us in this project the idea is that each of us covers the cost of the postage and send our ?Casey?s Cases? ourselves.
